A car accident on Tuesday along the Lokoja-Abuja highway resulted in at least 15 fatalities and five other significant injuries, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kogi State Sector Command.

A J-5 Boxer Bus and a gasoline tanker were both involved in the accident at Koton-Karfe along the Lokoja-Abuja route, according to Sector Commander of the FRSC in the State Stephen Dawulung, who verified the incident to journalists in Lokoja.

The remains of the deceased victims were placed at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) morgue in Lokoja, he continued, while the five injured people were transported to Ideal Hospital at Koton-Karfe for emergency medical attention.

The FRSC director cited a breach of traffic laws as the cause of the accident.
The bus driver exited his lane and was traveling in the opposite direction at a fast rate of speed when he collided head-on with an approaching fuel tanker, according to Dawulung.

“Thank God the petroleum product-laden tanker did not catch fire; that would have been more disastrous and concerning.

15 of the 17 people on the bus, who were wearing iron cramps, were fatally suffocated and squeezed to death in the crash.
