Football fans beg electricity company to supply power for AFCON final
Football fever grips Aba, Abia State, but the excitement is tempered by anxiety over unreliable electricity. Fans desperately plead with Aba Power Limited (APL) to provide stable power for the crucial AFCON final between Nigeria and Ivory Coast.
“We haven’t seen a single match with public power,” lamented a football agent, reflecting the frustration of many. Citizens rely heavily on generators, adding to the financial burden in a city already struggling with high petrol costs.
Enyimba FC’s media manager, David Orji, echoes the sentiment, “Nobody trusts APL anymore.” He vows to keep his generator ready, highlighting the power company’s chronic failures.
The lack of electricity goes beyond just watching the game. “We need electricity every day,” pleads resident Uche Maduako, emphasizing the importance of stable power for basic necessities.
Despite the challenges, the spirit of the fans remains undimmed. Kelechi Makwe, a sportswear vendor, declares, “We’ll watch regardless,” hinting at a possible citywide hum of generators come Sunday.
The message is clear: Aba’s football fans are passionate, but their ability to fully enjoy the AFCON final hinges on APL fulfilling its basic obligation to provide reliable power. Will the company heed their pleas and deliver a flicker of hope alongside the goals? Only time will tell.
