Osun Governorship: Adeleke, Oyetola know Fate Today

Ademola Adeleke, the governor of Osun State, appealed the decision of the Osun State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal that removed him from office on January 27, 2023. The Court of Appeal in Abuja will issue its ruling today.

After hearing from the parties’ attorneys, a three-person Court of Appeal panel chaired by Mohamed Lawal Shuaibu reserved decision on Adeleke’s appeal.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was instructed to remove Adeleke’s certificate of return and issue a new one to Oyetola as the state’s legitimately elected governor after the state tribunal dismissed him.

Adeleke did not win the majority of valid votes in the state’s governorship election on July 16, according to the tribunal.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Adeleke was named the victor of the July 16 governorship election.

In August 2022, Oyetola, the former governor of Osun, and his party, the All Progressives Congress, petitioned the tribunal to challenge Adeleke’s victory on the grounds that Adeleke was ineligible to run for office and that there was excessive voting in 749 polling locations throughout the state’s 10 local government areas.

Two of the three judges who made up the tribunal’s panel decided that Oyetola could demonstrate that there was overvoting in some of the polling places.
