Teaching Jobs in UK: Eligibility criteria amended as application period opens
Nigeria was one of the four source markets recently added to the list of nations targeted by the United Kingdom for teacher recruitment, along with Ghana, Zimbabwe and South Africa.
Under the UK’s Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) program, the option for teachers in the four nations would be available beginning in February of this year.
Recently, a change to the initial eligibility requirements for job applicants was announced in the UK.
Only that applicants who major in fields like mathematics, sciences, and some language disciplines are eligible to apply was declared by the Department of Education.
In a previous announcement posted on its website, interested candidates were urged to submit an application for the QTS through the Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA).
According to the information, in order to receive the QTS, teachers from all nations that qualify must demonstrate that they meet a uniform set of requirements.
The revised eligibility requirements introduced some requirements while removing others.
According to the amended notice, which was posted on the UK government website, there would be a restriction on subject eligibility in select nations, including Nigeria, Ghana, India, Jamaica, Singapore, South Africa, and Zimbabwe.
The decision, according to the UK government, was made to make sure it provides effective and reliable service to all job candidates.
One of the justifications it provided for the modification was for the UK to give priority to the subject specializations that England’s schools require.
It was said that the impacted nations will continue to be informed of new developments and that by May 2023, additional subjects in some areas of specialization would be available.
For candidates from Ghana, India, Jamaica, Nigeria, Singapore, South Africa, or Zimbabwe, additional requirements have been imposed, such as the requirement that they possess one of the recently announced qualifications.
The requirements are:
- a teaching credential that satisfies the requirements of a level 6 certificate allowing you to instruct students between the ages of 11 and 16 in mathematics, languages, or science;
- a teaching certification that satisfies the requirements of a level 6 certification allowing you to instruct students between the ages of 11 and 16.
and a bachelor’s degree with at least 50% of the coursework in math, science, or a language other than English that is taught in English state schools, such French or German. Japanese, Latin, Mandarin, Russian, Spanish, Italian, and more.
