Uganda New Year’s event organiser arrested after deadly stampede

According to the vice president, the number of people killed in a stampede at a shopping center during New Year’s celebrations in the capital of Uganda has increased to 10, and police have detained the event’s organizer.

One more person passed away on Sunday night, according to Vice President Jessica Alupo, who visited the scene on Monday in Kampala. She said that each victim’s family will receive $1,350 from the government to help with funeral expenses.

Partygoers were slain at Freedom City Mall when crowds of people gathered to see midnight fireworks from a single exit.

Four youngsters, ranging in age from 10 to 17, died.

According to the police, the organizer disregarded a rule stating that youngsters must be accompanied by an adult at these events.

According to police spokesman Patrick Onyango, murder charges against organizer Abbey Musinguzi are being held against her until her appearance in court.

The promoter of the New Year’s concert has already been taken into custody, police officer Fred Enanga told reporters on Monday. We are always looking for additional organizers and promoters, too.

Investigators were determining whether “negligence” was to fault for the deaths, he added, adding that the promoters had ordered the closure of four additional exits.

The partygoers only had one point of entry and exit, according to Enanga. Because of this, a number of victims were trapped and crushed through the small opening, which turned into a bottleneck for many people, especially children.
